Q: Is my baby feeding enough?

This is one of the most common (and completely understandable) worries for new mums — especially in the early weeks when everything is so new and your baby can’t yet tell you what they need.
Wet nappies are a great sign — by around day 5 onwards, most babies will have at least 5 heavy wet nappies each day. The wee should be pale and not too smelly — a sign they’re well hydrated.
Poos also offer clues. From around day 5, breastfed babies will usually have 2–3 soft, mustard-coloured poos each day. Formula-fed babies might poo a little less often, and that’s okay too.
Watch how your baby feeds and behaves afterward. Many babies seem calm, sleepy, or content after a good feed — though some may still fuss or want extra comfort, which is also normal.
And remember — every baby is different. If your baby’s having regular wet and dirty nappies, is gaining weight, and seems mostly content between feeds, chances are they’re getting what they need.
But if you’re unsure or feel like something isn’t quite right, always trust your gut. Reach out to your maternal health nurse, GP, midwife, or a lactation consultant.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
